Canary Cafe: Slow Food Wonder

Canary Cafe is the brainchild of gourmet guru Chef Gorji and his European sensibilities about cuisine and dining. The intimate, brightly decorated restaurant only accommodates ten tables, and diners are encouraged to dine leisurely and relax. With world travels and many previous restaurant gigs under his belt, Chef Gorji crafts an intricate blend of Greek, Italian, Spanish, Middle Eastern, and North African dishes into a "New" Mediterranean cuisine. Central to craft these light, flavorful dishes are prime cuts of meat, fresh seafood and ingredients, and the Chef's special ingredient: pomegranate. The a la carte dinner menu features a carefully curated cull of appetizers with hummus, eggplant, escargot; salads of artichoke, fresh fruit, prosciutto; and entrees like prime rib, lamb chop, salmon lemon, and Colorado lamb t-bone. The $39 Prix Fixe menu changes every few weeks to reflect seasonal ingredients and new innovations. Special events include cooking and wine pairing courses.

The Grape: Texas’s Best Burger

With the astounding preponderance of amazing burger joints in the Lone Star State, what does it take for a Dallas wine bar to come out on top of them all? When The Grape was named the best place to get a burger in all of Texas, people were shocked. But after the fuss died down, it had to be admitted—it is a darn good burger. Opened in 1972, this place was one of the first European-style bistros in town, offering a traditional chalkboard menu that changes based on the day’s ingredients. The food has changed a little bit over the years to reflect the location, but it’s still incredibly delicious. Breakfast diners go wild over the fried chicken on a homemade jalapeno biscuit, and the steak frites are always spectacular. This old-fashioned comfort food doesn’t detract in any way from the Grape’s nice atmosphere or spectacular service, and the wine selections are always fantastic.

Cadot Restaurant: Fantastic French

From the outside, Jean-Marie Cadot’s restaurant doesn’t look like much. But step inside and you’ll quickly learn that the Parisian immigrant stands behind one of the best French kitchens in town. With almost thirty years of experience serving upscale French cuisine, he’s made the establishment that bears his name a destination for Dallas foodies since 2009. The escargot in herbed garlic butter is a fantastic dish—this very French delicacy is cooked to absolute perfection. Duck confit spring rolls lend an Asian touch to the menu that is very rewarding. For entrees, the cassoulet can’t be beat; this traditional country-style dish has been undergoing a resurgence in recent years, and for good reason. Mussels with frites are also spectacular, with an awesome white wine sauce perfectly flavoring the tender shellfish. The lunch menu is also quite nice, with delicious soups and sandwiches lending a more casual feel to the restaurant. For dessert, the profiteroles can’t be beat.
